Ale v naší sluneční soustavě je další planeta s prstenci – Neptun.
Nachází se daleko za oběžnou dráhou Uranu, Neptun je 8. (a nejvzdálenější) planeta od Slunce.Na
17 násobek hmotnosti Země, je mnohem větší než náš vlastní svět a vykazuje výraznou modrou barvu pouhým okem kvůli stopám metanu v nejvzdálenějších částech jeho atmosféry.
Jeho prstencový systém je mnohem méně zřejmý než saturnský, ale přesto tam je. Existují tři hlavní prstence – každý z nich se skládá z ledových částic potažených křemičitany nebo materiálem na bázi uhlíku.
Prstence jsou na fotografii pozoruhodně jasné, zatímco samotný Neptun vypadá jasně bíle.
“Prstence jsou v infračerveném oboru více reflexní,” říká Mark McCaughrean z ESA.
“Takže jsou mnohem lépe vidět.”
Na snímku je také vidět několik Neptunových měsíců. “Druh astronomie, kterou nyní vidíme, byl před pěti lety nepředstavitelný,” řekl McCaughrean.
