V posledních letech lidé rádi chovají obří šneky rodu Achatina doma. Tito obří šneci se poměrně snadno udržují, nezapáchají, nezabírají mnoho místa a nezpůsobují alergie.
Stále však mají další negativní vlastnosti. V zemích, kde je stále teplo, se acháty stanou velkým problémem, jakmile se dostanou do volné přírody, protože se aktivně rozmnožují a živí se místními rostlinami.
Na Floridě bylo nedávno uloveno více než 1 000 obřích plžů afrických.
“Ujišťuji vás, že tyto slimáky vymýtíme,” řekla novinářům na tiskové konferenci mluvčí floridského ministerstva zemědělství Nikki Friedová. Problém je tam považován za tak závažný, že se k němu dokonce pořádají samostatné tiskové konference.
Plži mohou dorůstat délky až 20 cm a živí se stovkami druhů rostlin. Maximální velikost, která byla dosud zjištěna ve volné přírodě na Floridě, je “pouhých” 11 cm.
Představují hrozbu pro lidské zdraví, protože přenášejí určité druhy nemocí. Vládní úředníci kvůli slimákům vytvořili v jednom městě celou karanténní zónu. Vyzývají obyvatele, aby měkkýše nesbírali a aby se nedotýkali rostlin, půdy, kompostu a dalších předmětů, pokud mají podezření, že se tam slimák dostal.
Kromě všech výše uvedených problémů existuje ještě jeden: Achatina může požírat omítky a sádrokartonové desky a způsobit tak velmi specifické poškození materiálu.
Nejnepříjemnější na této situaci je, že se jedná o druhý nález plže na Floridě. Poprvé byl přivezen asi před deseti lety a tehdy bylo vynaloženo 23 milionů dolarů na jeho vypátrání a úplné zničení.
Stojí za zmínku, že ve státě Florida je nelegální chovat doma acháty, ale zdá se, že mnozí tento zákon stále porušují. V naší oblasti přezimování tohoto plže ve volné přírodě zatím brání dostatečně dlouhá a intenzivní zima.
